Valentines Blog

Roses are red

Violets are blue

It’s all happening in Herterich’s

For me and you

There may be wind, rain and snowstorms on the way but love is in the air and cupid himself is busily at work in Ballymahon Street Longford where master butcher Louis and his merry men have been busy preparing a special range of treats and exclusive offers for you and your loved one as today is February 14th – Valentines Day.

So forget queuing up in a busy restaurant for a table to celebrate – why not buy some of the best locally produced meat of your choice in town in Herterich’s, cook it slowly to your heart’s content, put some romantic music on, turn the lights down low, open a bottle of Herterich’s Artisan Meat’s finest wine and enjoy a home made meal for two at home – with just your sweetheart for company? What more could you want?

In other news it’s been a sad time in Longford over the past few weeks with the town mourning the loss of one of its most popular businessmen -Berney Crossan, proprietor of Crossan’s Electrical Store in Main Street for forty years.

Originally from Ardrum, Ballinamore, County Leitrim, Berney was a familiar sight in the popular store for all that time and was always kind and courteous with the that personal touch when it came to dealing with his customers. More than that, he was a gentleman.

Berney was very much involved in the local community including Longford Chamber of Commerce and was a keen lover of sport. He had suffered ill health for the past number of months and sadly passed away recently.

Longford also lost former County Manager Michael Killeen, another man of great stature who will be greatly missed. Michael was County Manager in Longford from 1977 until 2006 and was one of the longest-serving managers in the country.

Scouring the papers I see, as I enjoy a pew in Herterich’s Artisan Meats Store, we’ve all enjoyed great nights out at the wonderful Backstage Theatre but that could be at risk as recently General Manager Mona Considine called on Longford County Council to find more funding to support the much loved local facility in the future, pointing out that a policy of cuts in funding by the Arts Council over the past six years has led to serious concerns about it’s future.

The Backstage Theatre, she claims, costs some half a million euro to run on an annual basis, but receives just €130,000 euro from the Arts Council this year, and €50,000 from Longford County Council.

More doom and gloom I think – but thank God things only get better and better in Herterich’s Ballymahon Street Longford who have just enjoyed a hugely successful Wholesale Sale last Sunday which saw plenty of treats and the finest locally produced food available at great prices!

At the moment there is great
value in store with five dinners for just €20! This package contains 1 large Irish Chicken (1600gms) 4 pork chops, 2lb sausages, 750 pack of Beef mince and pack of rashers – all for only €20!
